American expat Mickey Pearson has built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.
Guy Ritchie returns to his Lock Stock wheelhouse with sharp, snappy dialogue and a stellar ensemble — McConaughey, Grant, and Dockery all deliver memorable turns that push Acting firmly above average. The nested, unreliable-narrator storytelling structure gives it some Novelty but it largely recycles Ritchie's own established style rather than breaking new ground. The plot is entertaining and labyrinthine but more clever than profound, and the ending wraps things up satisfyingly without being particularly surprising. Cinematography is slick and functional but not visually distinguished. A fun, well-crafted crime romp elevated primarily by its cast.
