Taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.

The Quartile Take

Arrival is a cerebral, emotionally resonant sci-fi masterpiece. Its plot is intellectually rigorous and thematically rich, weaving linguistics, determinism, and grief into a cohesive whole. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner deliver grounded, nuanced performances. Roger Deakins-style atmospheric cinematography by Bradford Young gives the film a haunting, cold beauty — the heptapod ship sequences are iconic. The film is distinctly singular: a first-contact story that prioritizes language and consciousness over spectacle, making it highly novel. The ending, while emotionally powerful, is slightly divisive — the non-linear reveal works for many but can feel manipulative or abrupt on first viewing, preventing it from being fully transcendent.
